SCRANTON – Scranton’s Jason Shields and Dunmore’s Ciera Toomey completed Most Valuable Player award-winning performances Wednesday in the finals of the Lynett Memorial Tournament at the Lackawanna College Student Union.
Arvel Chandler and Moriah Murray made sure they had plenty of help while landing on the all-tournament teams.
Shields scored 20 points and Chandler added 19 on 5-for-7 shooting from 3-point range as Scranton defeated Scranton Prep for its first Lynett Tournament boys title in 9 years.
Murray scored 17 points and Toomey added 15 in Dunmore’s 46-17 rout of Scranton Prep in the girls final.
Shields also had seven rebounds and four assists. His streak of seven straight points – the last two of the third quarter and five in the first minute of the fourth quarter – put the Knights ahead to stay.
Chandler, who also had three steals, went 5-for-7 from 3-point range.
Dunmore avenged its only two losses of the last two-plus seasons and its only loss in the last six Lynett Memorial Girls Tournaments.
The Lady Bucks held the Classics without a field goal in the middle two quarters and put the game into the Mercy Rule with more than two minutes left in the third quarter.
Murray was 6-for-10 from the floor and 3-for-5 from 3-point range with one of the misses coming from beyond halfcourt at the first-quarter buzzer.
Toomey was 6-for-11, joining Murray in helping the Lady Bucks shoot 50 percent. She also grabbed eight rebounds.
Mia Blume chipped in five assists and three steals while making two of her three shots for four points.
Gabe Gonzales scored 13 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the early afternoon game to lead Holy Cross past Dunmore, 42-38, for third place in the boys tournament.
The third-place girls game was canceled when Holy Cross opted out of its game with Scranton because of COVID issues.
Riverside and Mid Valley boys teams as well as the Valley View, Pittston Area and Western Wayne girls teams also won tournament titles Wednesday.
Tournament MVP Frankie Antoniacci hit a 3-pointer in each quarter on the way to 18 points as Riverside ripped West Scranton, 58-31, to win the Taylor Lions Tournament.
Matthew Godlewski added 13 points and Anthony Karpinski 10 for the Vikings.
The Vikings followed up the Lady Vikes to give host Riverside a sweep of the Taylor Lions tournaments.
Gabe Tanner scored 14 of his 20 points in the second half to lead Mid Valley past host Valley View, 47-44, in the Peter Turonis/NBT Bank Classic final.
The Spartans overcame an eight-point deficit in the fourth quarter with the help of Danny Nemitz scoring half of his 16 points.
Earlier in the doubleheader, Valley View fought off a Lakeland rally to win, 50-49, and claim its third straight Lou Camoni Memorial Tournament title.
Giada Costa led the way with 18 points.
Lakeland erased a 13-point, third-quarter deficit before Valley View recovered to pull out the win.
Ava Callahan made three 3-pointers while matching Kallie Booth with a game-high 12 points as unbeaten Pittston Area defeated rival Wyoming Valley for the second straight week, 52-25, in the Anthony “Badger” Marseco Memorial Tournament at Old Forge.
Leah Zambetti and Daniella Ranieli added 10 points each.
Tournament MVP Kaeli Romanowski scored 33 points to lead Western Wayne past Wallenpaupack, 59-35, in the final of the Honesdale Jaycees Tournament.
In other boys games: East Stroudsburg South defeated Wallenpaupack, 68-54; Honesdale ripped Western Wayne, 52-21; Hazleton Area topped Bethlehem Liberty, 47-43; Delaware Valley defeated Minisink Valley (N.Y.), 53-38; Stroudsburg defeated Forest City, 62-41; Abington Heights defeated Danville, 52-36; and Marian Catholic trounced MMI Prep, 63-36.
East Stroudsburg South defeated Wallenpaupack for the Honesdale Jaycees championship.
Honesdale took third place on its home court.
Josian Guerra was named game MVP for his effort in Hazleton Area’s win for third place in the Allentown Allen Tournament. He finished with 24 points, 6 rebounds, 2 assists, 2 blocked shots and 2 steals.
Delaware Valley wound up 1-1 in the Milford-Matamoras Rotary event where it faced different opponents each of the past two days.
Jake Brower scored 15 of his 18 points in the first half to lead the Warriors.
Stroudsburg lost in the opener at the Taylor Lions Tournament. Forest City agreed to serve as the opponent of Stroudsburg, which lost in Tuesday’s first round, after its own tournament appearance was wiped out when North Pocono canceled the James Akens Memorial Tournament.
Cade Hartman led the Foresters with 15 points.
Abington Heights won and MMI Prep lost in non-league games.
In other girls games: Hazleton Area beat Marion Center, 50-39; Pocono Mountain West topped Holy Redeemer, 55-47; Old Forge defeated Wyoming Seminary, 32-24; Honesdale ripped Forest City, 50-15; Spring-Ford routed Wyoming Valley West, 72-34; Nanticoke defeated Berwick, 43-38; Wilkes-Barre Area topped Hanover Area, 45-22; Crestwood edged Marian Catholic, 36-33; and Northeast Bradford handled Tunkhannock, 47-29.
Lacie Kringe scored 21 points and made 7 steals as Hazleton Area reached the final of the Truance Holiday Classic at Punxsutawney.
The hosts broke out of a halftime tie to defeat Holy Redeemer in the Pocono Mountain West Tournament.
Old Forge and Honesdale each used the wins to claim third place in tournaments they hosted.
Talia Piragas scored 19 points to lead Old Forge, which held Wyoming Seminary to two points each in the first and fourth quarters of the Anthony “Badger” Marseco Tournament.
Spring-Ford made the trip to play at Wyoming Valley West when the teams had their game against each other canceled along with the rest of the Akens Tournament at North Pocono.
Nanticoke, Wilkes-Barre Area and Crestwood all won non-league games.
Crestwood held Marian Catholic scoreless in the first period, but still wound up facing a three-point deficit going into the fourth quarter.
