Both Mid Valley teams return to rankings

The Old Forge boys were the only new team to enter the top three in any category while North Pocono returned to the Big School boys list by shooting right up into fourth place when the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams were released early Monday morning.

The Dallas and Holy Redeemer boys, along with the Dunmore and Western Wayne girls all held No. 1 spots.

Both Mid Valley teams and the Dunmore boys joined North Pocono as teams returning to the Super Six this week after all teams completed their regular seasons and league playoffs and got ready for the start of the District 2 tournament Tuesday.

The Abington Heights and Pittston Area girls joined the Old Forge boys as teams moving up this week.

All the No. 2 teams also remained the same: Scranton in Big School boys, Holy Cross in Small School boys, Scranton Prep in Big School girls and Riverside in Small School girls.

The biggest changes, as if often the case, were in Big School boys.

Dallas held first with four wins, all by at least 19 points, even though three of them were playoff games needed to win both Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 and tournament titles. The Mountaineers have won 15 straight by an average margin of 24.9.

Scranton won a pair of two-point games at home – in overtime over Abington Heights and in regulation over Scranton Prep – beating the two teams the Knights had shared first place with in order to claim a repeat of their Lackawanna League Division 1 title.

Pittston Area had the week off, but remained in third as it prepared to take a seven-game winning streak into the district playoffs.

North Pocono won three times, extended its winning streak to four games and returned to the rankings in fourth. The Trojans got all-star point guard Ryan Ruddy back from an injury and beat a ranked team for the second straight week, topping Abington Heights after earlier winning at Wallenpaupack.

Hazleton Area dropped from fourth to fifth after posting an impressive WVC Tournament semifinal win over Small School No. 1 Holy Redeemer, but losing twice to Dallas.

Mid Valley rejoined the rankings in sixth place with three wins, including beating Holy Cross, 43-35, Saturday night in a playoff for the Lackawanna Division 3 title.

Abington Heights and Wallenpaupack, which had been fifth and sixth, fell out of the rankings.

Abington Heights lost its two games. Wallenpaupack, the Lackawanna Division 2 champion, lost a game for the second straight week.

Holy Redeemer and Holy Cross remained 1-2 in Small School boys.

WVC Division 2 champion Holy Redeemer lost at Hazleton Area in the conference semifinals.

Holy Cross fell to Mid Valley in the Lackawanna Division 3 title game after winning two earlier games to extend its winning streak to 13 games.

Old Forge swapped places with rival Riverside after beating the Vikings, 44-41, to take over third. The Blue Devils also lost to Holy Cross.

Riverside had a 1-1 week, beating Elk Lake, 64-46.

Dunmore won twice and rejoined the rankings in fifth, knocking out former No. 6 Blue Ridge, 75-58.

Elk Lake dropped from fifth to sixth after losing to Riverside, but recovering to repeat as Lackawanna Division 4 champion with a 53-51 win at Mountain View.

Three division championship teams all headed for the District 2 Class 4A tournament remain 1-2-3 in Big School girls.

Lackawanna Division 3 champion Dunmore ran its winning streak to 13 while remaining first.

Division 1 champ Scranton Prep wrapped up a fifth straight perfect Lackawanna League season to hold second.

Division 2 champion Lake-Lehman added the WVC Tournament title to its resume, beating two Division 1 teams while running its winning streak to 11.

Abington Heights and Pittston Area each moved up a spot into fourth and fifth.

Abington Heights won twice by a total of 66 points and enters the playoffs on a four-game winning streak.

Pittston Area experienced both extremes. The Lady Patriots defeated Wilkes-Barre Area twice to win the WVC Division 1 title and added a tournament win over Holy Redeemer, but suffered a Mercy Rule loss to Lake-Lehman in the WVC Tournament final.

Wilkes-Barre Area dropped two places to sixth after going 1-3 in a five-day stretch.

The top five in Small School girls are unchanged.

Western Wayne and Riverside are followed by Holy Cross, Montrose and Lakeland.

The top three teams went 2-0 on the week.

Montrose was 3-0 by a total of 96 points while repeating its Lackawanna Division 4 title and running its winning streak to seven.

Lakeland lost twice.

Mid Valley inflicted one of those Lakeland losses, using that victory to climb over Elk Lake into the rankings.

Elk Lake lost three of four games during the week.
