BOYS ROUNDUP: Dallas downs Pittston Area

Michael Cumbo fueled a fast start and finished with 20 points Tuesday night when Dallas defeated visiting, 49-39, in a meeting of Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 boys contenders.

The Mountaineers won the meeting of two of the three teams tied for second place in the division at the start of the night to complete a season sweep of the Patriots.

Cumbo hit three 3-pointers in the first quarter. He scored 13 points and Austin Finarelli had 6 of his 17 to give Dallas a 19-7 lead.

Cumbo did all the scoring as the Mountaineers ran out to a 10-1 lead.

Pittston Area worked its way back within 36-30 after three quarters, but Dallas pulled away by going 11-for-12 from the line in the fourth quarter.

Nick Nocito made all four of his fourth-quarter free throws while Cumbo, Finarelli and Jackson Wydra went 2-for-2 and Michael Bufalino was 1-for-2.

J.J. Walsh made four 3-pointers while scoring 16 points to lead Pittston Area.

Dallas, the No. 4 Big School in the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams, improved to 6-2 in the division and 10-3 overall. Fifth-ranked Pittston Area is 5-3 and 10-4.

In Tuesday’s other boys games, all of which were played in the WVC:

Wilkes-Barre Area 50, Tunkhannock 45

Jacob Horga scored 14 points and Bryan Clarke added 13 when Wilkes-Barre Area won at Tunkhannock to remain in the second-place tie with Dallas in Division 1.

Horga, Clarke and Brandon Benjamin all scored six points in a 20-13 second quarter to open a 27-18 halftime lead.

Ben Chilson led Tunkhannock with 16 points while Shane Macko added 13.

Hazleton Area 55, Crestwood 39

Josian Guerra scored 20 points and made 7 steals to lead the way as Division 1 leader Hazleton Area won on the road over defending champion Crestwood.

Luke Gennaro went 3-for-5 on 3-pointers while adding 14 points.

Guerra had six points in each of the first two quarters, then Gennaro hit two 3-pointers in the third. They helped the Cougars build the lead from 14-9 after one quarter to 26-17 at halftime to 41-22 going into the fourth quarter.

Zayne Dunsmuir, who did all his scoring in the first half, and Drew Sechleer finished with eight points each for Crestwood.

Holy Redeemer 74, Wyoming Seminary 31

Justice Shoats scored 23 points as Division 2 leader Holy Redeemer ran over defending champion Wyoming Seminary on the road.

The Royals outscored the Blue Knights 49-19 over the middle two quarters to open a 63-24 lead.

Marc Jackett led Wyoming Seminary with 11 points.

Wyoming Valley West 40, Berwick 30

Jonathan Mann scored 13 points to lead Wyoming Valley West to the road victory in Division 1.

Mann had the only first-quarter points for the Spartans, who were held to a field goal while falling behind 7-4 after the first eight minutes. They tied the game at halftime and opened a 29-20 lead with a 15-6, third-quarter advantage.

Sean Murphy led Berwick with 11 points.

Hanover Area 65, Lake-Lehman 54

Elijah Noe and Melikah Gonzalez each made four 3-pointers while scoring 16 points in Hanover Area’s Division 2 home-court win.

Andrew Fleming went 5-for-6 from the line while scoring 7 of his 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Lake-Lehman was led by Corey Bean with 15 points with the help of four 3-pointers. Cole Morio hit three 3-pointers while adding 12.

Wyoming Area 59, MMI Prep 58

Matt Little scored 14 points to lead Wyoming Area to the Division 2 road win.
