Jason Shields scored 13 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter, including the game-winning free throws that lifted Scranton over visiting Scranton Prep, 51-49, to lock up a Lackawanna League Division 1 boys title repeat.
Shields hit two free throws with 4.8 seconds left to break a tie and give Scranton its third victory in five days in which the winning points were scored in the final five seconds.
Scranton Prep had a chance to force a first-place tie and playoff if it could complete a home-and-home sweep of Scranton.
The Cavaliers took a 45-35 lead in the fourth quarter, but buoyed by strong, man-to-man defense, Scranton put together a closing, 16-4 run in less than six minutes. Shields had 11 of the points, making a 3-pointer and going 4-for-4 from the line.
Scranton Prep led most of the way, but Shields and A.J. Dinterman, who added 14 points, each hit a pair of second-half, 3-pointers.
Robert Rossi scored 21 points to lead Scranton Prep. He made three 3-pointers, including hitting two in the first quarter when he scored 10 points.
The Cavaliers scored the last seven points of the first quarter for a 12-8 lead. They led 25-19 at halftime and 39-33 after three quarters.
Matt Cobb scored 14 points for Scranton Prep.
Scranton, the No. 2 Big School in the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams, finished 11-2 in the division and improved to 19-2 overall.
Scranton Prep and Abington Heights, which lost at North Pocono, each entered the night with a chance to be part of a first-place tie, but finished two games back at 9-4.
Shields hit 3-pointer with a second left in overtime Saturday to beat Maine-Endwell (N.Y.) and Arvel Chandler tipped in his own miss with two seconds left in overtime Monday to give the Knights sole possession of the division lead.
Following Shields’ winning free throws, Scranton Prep had one last chance coming out of a timeout. A long 3-point try was off the mark.
