YATESVILLE – Kallie Booth repeated her Tom Tigue Award as Pittston Area Most Valuable Player in the rivalry game with Wyoming Area, but this time she did it while on the winning side.
Booth scored 18 points, grabbed 4 rebounds and made 2 steals Tuesday night to lead Pittston Area past visiting Wyoming Area, 38-26, for the Tigue-Denisco Cup.
The junior guard was 6-for-11 from the floor, 4-for-8 on 3-pointers and 2-for-3 on free throws.
Freshman Daniela Ranieli was 4-for-6 on 3-pointers while adding 14 points, 7 rebounds, 4 steals and 3 assists.
Pittston Area (5-0) did not score for more than five minutes to begin the game, but then ran off 13 straight points with the help of two 3-pointers by Booth and one by Ranieli for a 13-3 lead in the first minute of the second quarter.
Wyoming Area could not get closer than five the rest of the way, six in the second half or eight in the fourth quarter.
Morgan Janeski repeated the Tony Denisco Award she earned as Wyoming Area’s top player when the Lady Warriors won, 39-36, in February. Janeski and Jocelyn Williams scored six points each to lead Wyoming Area (4-3).
In other Tuesday girls games: Montrose rallied past Lakeland, 45-40; Riverside routed North Pocono, 59-18; Lackawanna Trail edged Old Forge, 53-50; Wyoming Valley West defeated Valley View, 61-50; and Nanticoke defeated Honesdale, 48-33.
Tangi Smith scored 20 points to lead Montrose, which trailed 24-22 at halftime before outscoring Lakeland, 10-3, in the third.
Skylar Arendt led Lakeland with 19 points.
Kylie Lavelle was 9-for-13 from the floor while leading Riverside with 26 points, 12 rebounds and 4 steals. She had 18 points while Riverside was building a 40-7 halftime lead.
Kate Slaboda added 15 points and 13 rebounds.
Amaya Monacelli led North Pocono with seven points.
Amarlis Thiel scored 18 points and Mackenzie Schirg added 16 for Lackawanna Trail.
Talia Piragas had 19 points for Old Forge.
Trinity Johnson led Wyoming Valley West’s victory with 21 points and Gabby Marsola added 16.
Riley Baird had 19 points and Claire Aufiero 15 for Nanticoke in its win.
Wallenpaupack and Holy Cross rallied on the road to pull out boys victories.
Wyatt Peifer hit a 3-pointer to end the third quarter, then Wallenpaupack outscored Dunmore, 19-5, in the fourth quarter to complete its rally from 14 down in the second half.
Wallenpaupack’s Jack Smith made all eight foul shots in the fourth to finish with 17 points.
Holy Cross came from eight down at halftime to defeat Blue Ridge, 61-52.
In other boys games: Northwest downed Forest City, 44-28, and Hazleton Area handled Nanticoke, 59-39.
Landon Hufford scored 16 points and Gary McLendon added 15 in the win.
Josin Guerra scored 14 points and 3 Hazleton Area teammates provided at least 9.
