Rose nearly perfect in latest USC Upstate win

Rachael Rose’s accurate shooting reached a new level Monday when the freshman from Scranton Prep scored 19 points while missing just one attempt as she was leading the University of South Carolina Upstate to a 70-53 victory over Jacksonville University.

Rose did more than score. She grabbed eight rebounds, dished out six assists and made a steal.

USC Upstate (6-2) won its fourth straight, remained unbeaten at home and ended an eight-game losing streak in the series with Jacksonville (7-3).

Rose played 35 minutes and made all five of her attempts from the floor, including three 3-pointers. She was 6-for-7 at the foul line.

The 5-foot-7 guard, an alum of the NEPA Elite AAU program, was a force throughout.

Rose’s steal and assist created a 8-0 lead and led to a Jacksonville timeout.

After Jacksonville scored for the first time to make it 10-3, Rose hit a 3-pointer and added an assist on the fastbreak for a 15-3 lead.

Rose had eight points in a 13-5 run to end the third quarter and make the lead 54-35. She scored again in a fourth-quarter streak of six points for the game’s biggest lead at 22 points.

A two-time choice as Big South Rookie of the Week, Rose is averaging 13.3 points, 4.0 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 2.5 steals.

Rose is 38-for-70 (54.3 percent) from the floor, 8-for-17 (47.1 percent) on 3-pointers and 22-for-27 (81.5 percent) from the line.

Among the players with 10 or more attempts – the Spartans have seven from the field, five on free throws and four on 3-pointers – Rose has the top shooting percentage in each category.

George Tinsley also had a big scoring and rebounding game while leading his National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I team to victory.

Tinsley was one of three Binghamton Bearcats with 15 points while grabbing a team-high 9 rebounds in a 79-55 romp over Division III Oneonta State.

The junior forward from Abington Heights was 7-for-10 from the floor and 1-for-3 on 3-pointers in a team-high 30 minutes. He had two assists, a blocked shot and a steal.
