Scranton Prep boys return with a victory

James Pettinato hit five 3-pointers and Andrew Ferguson scored 14 second-half points Friday night when Scranton Prep made a successful return to action by winning its Lackawanna League Division 1 opener, 47-36, over visiting Valley View.

The Cavaliers returned from 15 days off to score the game’s first 15 points with the help of three Pettinato 3-pointers.

Scranton Prep spent the rest of the night turning back a series of Valley View rallies to improve to 4-4 overall. The Cougars fell to 0-4 and 4-7.

Dominic Memo had four points and Tyler Angeli hit a 3-pointer for the first surge, a 7-2 run to end the first quarter and close the gap to 17-7.

Memo wound up leading the Cougars with 10 points and Angeli had nine.

Valley View put together another 7-2 run.

Matt Cobb scored for Scranton Prep to open the second quarter, but the Cougars scored the last seven points of the half to make it 19-14.

Noah Veno and Angeli each had 3-pointers during the run.

Scranton Prep opened the second half with the first eight points before Valley View closed the quarter with an 11-5 run to cut the deficit from 13 to 7.

Pettinato hit two 3-pointers and Ferguson one for the Cavaliers during the quarter while Memo and Taheed Jewell scored four points each for the Cougars.

Ferguson, who had been scoreless in the first half, had 11 points in the fourth quarter to close out the win.

L.V. Pegula’s 3-pointer cut the gap to seven for the last time at 43-36 with 1:29 left. Angeli also had a 3-pointer and A.J. Kucharski a three-point play during the quarter, but Pegula’s basket was the last of the game and the Cavaliers put the game away on the line.

Cobb and Rossi had eight points each for Valley View.
