District 2 power ratings finalized, pairings set

EDITOR'S NOTE: If you are looking at this file, you might prefer to instead access the story on the official pairings that were released late Sunday morning. It includes new information on starting times of 6A boys games; quarterfinal games at Dunmore, Dallas and Mid Valley; and a Class 3A girls game at Montrose. Find that listing at: https://nepabasketball.com/2021-22/D2PairingsReleased. Or, read both, because this story contains information that does not appear in the official announcement story.

The Scranton boys and three girls teams landed top seeds for their attempted title defenses in the District 2 basketball playoffs, which will begin Tuesday and run through March 5 when the last of 11 championship games are played at the Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Scranton’s boys and the Wilkes-Barre Area girls earned top seeds in the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional. Holy Cross, in Class 2A, and Susquehanna, in Class A, are defending champions that are top seeds for District 2 girls tournaments.

Power ratings for all classifications became final Saturday with the conclusion of regular-season games involving District 2 teams and their opponents from this season. Those rankings determine the seeding order – and in some cases qualifiers – for district tournaments and subregional tournaments in which District 2 teams participate.

Williamsport from District 4 joins District 2 teams to create the subregional in Class 6A.

District 2 teams join a larger group from District 11 for a District 2-11 Class A Subregional in boys only.

Pairings and brackets have not yet been released by the District 2 committee, but based on policies already in place and the now-final standings, the pairings can easily be projected. Schedules have been set in advance for most games, although there will be some exceptions created during Sunday and Monday meetings to finalize plans for the tournaments.

Two schools – Pittston Area in Class 5A and Holy Cross in 2A – have both of their teams as top seeds.

Other top seed are: Dallas, Class 4A boys; Holy Redeemer, Class 3A boys; Pottsville Nativity BVM from District 11 in the District 2-11 Class A boys subregional; Dunmore in Class 4A girls and Western Wayne in Class 3A girls.

The Dunmore girls lead the only bracket that includes three regular-season champions. The Lady Bucks won Lackawanna League Division 3 and Scranton Prep won Lackawanna Division 2, both with perfect league records. Lake-Lehman won Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 and overall titles.

There are two brackets with a pair of championship teams each.

Dallas, the WVC Division 1 and overall boys champion, joins Lackawanna Division 3 champ Mid Valley in Class 4A boys where defending champion Scranton Prep remains a threat.

Class 3A girls has a similar look. Lackawanna Division 2 and 4 champions Western Wayne and Montrose are joined by defending district champion and this year’s Lackawanna Division 3 runnerup, Riverside.

Only the Montrose boys, a Class 3A team, chose not to participate in the open tournaments.

The only teams not able to qualify for the playoffs were those that finished worse than eighth in the ratings for either Class 4A event of Class 5A boys.

The Berwick, Western Wayne, Wyoming Valley West and MMI Prep boys failed to reach the postseason along with the Valley View, Tunkhannock and Hanover Area girls.

Dates are set for the following, in most cases:

Class 6A, 4A and 2A girls, as well as Class 5A and 3A boys will play quarterfinals Tuesday and semifinals Friday.

Class 6A, 4A and 2A boys and Class 5A and 3A girls have games in the quarterfinal round Wednesday and semifinal Saturduy.

The Class A boys subregional is Saturday, then March 2, with the finals to be determined.

The Class A girls tournament begins in the semifinal round Friday.

There will be exceptions to the dates when the district committee finalizes its plans Sunday and Monday.

For example, in Class 6A girls, the Wilkes-Barre Area semifinal home game is expected to be set for Thursday because the school is hosting the District 2 Individual Wrestling Championships Friday and Saturday.
