RaeAnna Andreas and Gabby Starr had big second halves Monday night when Berwick knocked Dallas from the ranks of the unbeatens with a 60-49 Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 girls basketball victory.
The defending champion Lady Bulldogs had lost their first two Division 1 games by a total of three points, but they were ready to hand the Lady Mounts their first loss when Dallas returned from a week off for COVID to begin its WVC schedule.
Andreas scored 10 of her game-high 21 points while going 8-for-10 from the line in the fourth quarter.
Starr, who finished with 19 points and 13 rebounds, scored seven points in the third quarter when Berwick used an 18-9 advantage to break a 28-28 tie.
Elizabeth Viglone led Dallas with 16 points.
In other Monday girls games: Holy Cross handled Mid Valley, 63-39, in Lackawanna League Division 3; Tunkhannock defeated Crestwood, 51-41, in WVC Division 1; and Wyoming Area defeated Hanover Area, 41-29, in WVC Division 2.
Kaci Kranson scored 14 of her 25 points in the first quarter when Holy Cross took control against visiting Mid Valley in a game between ranked Small Schools that had won their division openers Saturday.
Holy Cross, ranked third among Small Schools in the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams, closed the first quarter on a 10-2 run. The Lady Crusaders then added the first nine points of the second quarter for a 25-8 lead over the No. 5 Spartanettes with 3:28 left in the half.
Maci Iddings scored 8 of her 16 points in the third quarter when Tunkhannock pushed the lead into double digits.
Wyoming Area outscored Hanover Area 12-2 in the last seven minutes of the first half and 11-5 in the first 6½ minutes of the third to turn an 8-6 lead into 31-13.
Morgan Janeski led the Lady Warriors with 11 points.
Jack Smith hit the game-winning shot with 1.7 seconds left and Wyatt Peifer added two free throws to lift Wallenpaupack to a 33-30 victory over Valley View in a Lackawanna League Division 1-2 boys crossover.
Eli Yusavage’s jumper with 6.1 seconds left gave the visiting Cougars a 30-29 lead.
Following a timeout, Smith caught the in-bounds pass at midcourt, went to the basket and hit a floater in the lane for his second, final-minute game-winner in the last five days.
After a Valley View turnover, Peifer hit the free throws to finish a 17-point effort.
Yusavage had 18 for Valley View in the loss.
Division 2 leader Wallenpaupack and Division 4 leader Blue Ridge became the first teams to reach 3-0 in the Lackawanna League.
Host Blue Ridge got seven steals each from Connor Cranage, J.J. Rosa and Gavin Bennett while overwhelming Lackawanna Trail, 58-23.
The Raiders scored the game’s first 21 points before the Lions broke through with 5:19 left in the half. They were in front 34-2 before allowing Lackawanna Trail its first field goal with 1:51 left in the second quarter.
In other boys games: Holy Redeemer handled Lake-Lehman, 67-49, in WVC Division 2; Scranton pounded West Scranton, 86-48, in Lackawanna Division 1; North Pocono routed Honesdale, 69-39, and Delaware Valley downed Western Wayne, 51-35; in Lackawanna Division 2; Lakeland edged Old Forge, 44-41, and Riverside beat Carbondale, 65-44; in Lackawanna Division 3; Elk Lake defeated Montrose, 58-33, in Lackawanna Division 4; and Abington Heights ripped Tunkhannock, 57-27; Mid Valley mashed Susquehanna, 62-28, and Danville routed Berwick, 75-48, in non-league games.
Holy Redeemer and Scranton protected District 2’s only undefeated overall boys records.
The Royals opened a 30-point lead early in the third quarter at Lake-Lehman and coasted in from there.
Scranton scored 45 points in the first half of the city rivalry game to see which would match Abington Heights at 2-0 in Division 1.
Ryan Ruddy scored 23 points and A.J. Nemitz added 22 for North Pocono.
Ronny Jason scored 19 points and Ryan Dougherty added 17 for Delaware Valley.
Antonio Hazelton hit two free throws with 4.8 seconds left to close the scoring in Lakeland’s home-court upset. The Chiefs entered the game 2-6 overall while the Blue Devils were 4-4.
Defending champion Riverside bounced back from losing at Dunmore in its previous outing Thursday.
Elk Lake, another defending champion which got back on the winning track after losing its previous league game, ran out to a 21-4 lead after one quarter.
Matt Mowry scored 16 points while Trevor Graham hit four of his five 3-pointers in the first half of a 15-point performance.
