Hazleton Area, Mid Valley post key wins

Hazleton Area and Mid Valley posted victories Thursday night to change the leadership of two divisional boys races.

Hazleton Area jumped on Dallas early in a 66-52 victory to take the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 lead away from the visiting Mountaineers.

Mid Valley edged host Riverside, 45-43, in overtime to move into a tie for the Lackawanna League Division 3 lead with Dunmore.

Hazleton Area 66, Dallas 52

Khalid Morrieson scored 16 points to lead four players in double figures and Josian Guerra led a fast start by the Cougars in the battle between two of the top three Big Schools in the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

Guerra had 8 of his 15 points in the first quarter when the No. 3 Cougars took a 24-10 lead on the No. 2 Mountaineers.

Luke Gennaro hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter, then went 6-for-7 from the line in the middle quarters to finish with 14 points.

Eliud Lopez had half his 10 points in the first quarter.

After the other three got it started, Morrieson helped the Cougars fight off a second-half comeback by the Mountaineers and pull away again late.

Hazleton Area shot 24-for-33 from the line, including 12-for-17 in the fourth quarter.

Morrieson has 10-for-12, including 7-for-8 when he scored 11 points in the fourth quarter.

Gennaro was 6-for-7 at the line.

Austin Finarelli scored 12 of his 18 points in the second half for Dallas.

Nick Nocito had 16 points and Michael Cumbo 15.

Hazleton Area has the last unbeaten record in the division at 3-0 and is 7-2 overall. Dallas had a five-game winning streak broken while falling to 4-1 and 6-2.

Mid Valley 45, Riverside 43

Ricky Vinansky scored 16 points, including the winning free throws with 42.8 seconds left in overtime, to lead Mid Valley to the win at Riverside.

Mid Valley won its seventh straight to improve to 3-0 in Lackawanna Division 3 and 10-2 overall. Riverside fell to 2-2 and 8-3.

Riverside went ahead in the final minute, but Mid Valley recovered to force overtime.

Gabe Tanner added 12 points for Mid Valley in the game, which was close throughout.

Gerry Rose hit three 3-pointers while leading Riverside with 17 points.

Crestwood 64, Berwick 38

Defending WVC Division 1 champion Crestwood bounced back from a loss at Tunkhannock to pull away in its home game with Berwick.

Berwick was within six before Crestwood outscored the Bulldogs, 18-3, to end the third quarter and 31-11 for the remainder of the game.

Drew Sechleer returned from an illness to lead the Comets with 20 points and 7 assists. Zayne Dunsmuir added 18 points and 6 rebounds.

Dunsmuir had 12 points during a 20-5 third quarter.

Sean Murphy scored all of his team-high 14 points for Berwick in the first half.

Wilkes-Barre Area 54, Wyoming Valley West 42

Brandon Benjamin nailed five 3-pointers while scoring 22 points to lead Wilkes-Barre Area to the road win in WVC Division 1.

Wyoming Valley West led, 10-9, after holding Benjamin scoreless for the first quarter.

Jacob Horga scored his 10 points for the Wolfpack in the middle two quarters to help Wilkes-Barre Area get to the fourth quarter with a 41-36 lead.

Benjamin scored eight points and the Wolfpack allowed just one field goal in the fourth quarter.

Jonathan Mann led Wyoming Valley West with 14 points. Tyrese Harris added 10.

Nanticoke 65, Wyoming Area 54

Chris Johnson scored 19 points and Jaidyn Johnson added 16 when Nanticoke snapped a six-game losing streak with the WVC Division 2 win at Wyoming Area.

Jaidyn Johnson scored 12 of his points in the first half to help the Trojans to a 32-12 lead.

Peyton Kepp added 11 points for the Trojans.

Lukas Burakiewicz made six 3-pointers while leading Wyoming Area with 18 points.

Dane Schutter added 13 points while Matt Little scored all 11 of his points in the second half.

Lake-Lehman 50, MMI Prep 39

Gavin Paraschak scored 15 points and Corey Bean added 13 points as Lake-Lehman defeated visiting MMI Prep in WVC Division 2.

Brendan Brobst led the Preppers with 13 points.

Wallenpaupack 62, Delaware Valley 38

Landon Calabrese and Jack Smith helped Wallenpaupack use a fast start to remain unbeaten in the Lackawanna League with a Division 2 victory at Delaware Valley.

Smith scored 7 of his 10 points in the first quarter, which ended with the Buckhorns in front, 16-4.

Calabrese had 10 of his 12 by halftime to help create a 32-9 lead.

Jake Brower scored 13 points for Delaware Valley, which was playing without two starters.

Blue Ridge 79, Mountain View 64

J.J. Rosa and Connor Cranage both had double-doubles while Carson Gallagher scored 20 points for Lackawanna Division 4 leader Blue Ridge in the road win.

Gallagher made five 3-pointers.

Rosa scored 14 points and had his second straight 11-assist game.

Cranage had 12 points and 12 rebounds.

Gavin Bennett scored 14 points.

Mountain View was led by Ryan Henke with 23 points and Ryan Drake with 15.

Elk Lake 46, Susquehanna 39

Elk Lake broke away from a tie midway through the fourth quarter of the Lackawanna Division 4 road win.

Matt Mowry scored 13 of his 22 points in the fourth quarter to help the Warriors pull out the win.

Craig Slocum scored 11 points and Chris Orner 10 for Susquehanna.

Forest City 62, Montrose 56

Playing for the first time in 10 days, Forest City broke a four-game losing streak with the home-court win in Lackawanna Division 4.

Holy Cross 71, Lackawanna Trail 31

Holy Cross reached .500 overall by exceeding its previous season scoring high by 10 points with the help of a 41-point first half.
