Lady Vikes reclaim No. 1 position

Riverside repeated its District 2 Class 3A championship and reclaimed its status as the No. 1 Small School girls team in the latest My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.

The new rankings were released Sunday night, following Saturday night’s completion of 3 days of 11 championship games involving district teams at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza.

Following a district tournament with limited upsets, most of the ranked teams maintained their status of a week ago.

Riverside and Western Wayne traded the top two spots in Small School girls as they had done three previous times this season.

The only other change is Mid Valley gaining one spot in Big School boys, taking over fourth and dropping North Pocono to fifth.

The Dallas boys, Holy Redeemer boys and Dunmore girls each added district titles to their regular-season division titles, allowing them to maintain No. 1 rankings. The Royals and Lady Bucks have been No. 1 in all 13 sets of rankings this season.

Second-seeded Riverside defeated Lackawanna League Division 2 champion Western Wayne, 39-33, beating the Lady ‘Cats in the district final for the second straight season.

Holy Cross held on to the third spot by defeating sixth-ranked Elk Lake, 62-47, in the Class 2A championship game.

Montrose and Lakeland, which have completed their seasons, remained fourth and fifth while Elk Lake stayed in the sixth position.

Dallas, Scranton and Pittston Area won titles to hold on to first, second and third in Big School boys.

Dallas and Pittston Area won district championships in Class 4A and 5A.

Scranton, already a district champion, claimed the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional title by beating Williamsport, 47-42.

Mid Valley battled with Dallas in a 61-53 loss, allowing it to move past North Pocono, which was routed by Pittston Area, 59-26.

The Small School boys and Big School girls rankings remained the same.

Holy Redeemer are 1-2 in Small School boys after winning the district 3A and 2A titles.

Old Forge and Dunmore lost in the 2A and 3A finals to place third and fourth, ahead of Dunmore and Elk Lake, which have completed their seasons and rank fifth and sixth.

The top two teams in Big School girls met for the Class 4A title with No. 1 Dunmore beating Scranton Prep 43-42.

Abington Heights, Lake-Lehman, Pittston Area and Wilkes-Barre Area held third through sixth.

Abington Heights downed Pittston Area, 38-31, for the District 2 Class 5A championship.

Lake-Lehman claimed District 2’s third and final berth in the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association Class 4A state tournament.

Wilkes-Barre Area won the District 2-4 Class 6A Subregional.
