Add the University of North Carolina coaching staff to the list of those who think Ciera Toomey will be ready to make an impact on major women’s college basketball beginning two years from now.
Recently named by ESPN-W as the 14th best prospect in the nation among players in the Class of 2023, Toomey received her 16th National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I offer Tuesday when the Tar Heels joined the recruiting race.
North Carolina is coming off an NCAA Tournament appearance. The Tar Heels went 8-9 in the Atlantic Coast Conference and finished 13-11 with an 80-71 loss to Alabama in the first round of the tournament.
Toomey, a 6-foot-3 sophomore, was a first-team Class 4A all-state selection by Pennsylvania Sports Writers for her play in the 2020-21 season. She had been a third-team, all-state choice as a freshman when Dunmore competed in Class 3A.
Also one of the state’s top high school girls golfers, Toomey is currently working on her basketball game while playing for the NEPA Elite Clark 17U AAU team.
Toomey’s other Division I scholarship offers have come from Boston College, Bucknell, Michigan, Northeastern, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rider, St. John’s, Vanderbilt, Villanova and West Virginia. She also has offers to join the programs at Columbia and Pennsylvania, which, as Ivy League members, cannot offer athletic scholarships.
More major colleges continue to follow Toomey’s progress.
