Wilkes-Barre Area returns three of the four leading scorers from the Wolfpack girls basketball team that made a winning debut during the 2019-20 season.
Junior Gloria Adjayi and senior Vanessa Luna, who each received honorable mention on the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 all-star team selected by NEPABasketball.com, return along with senior guard Hannah Cook.
The Wolfpack showed off a deep team and flexible lineup in the first season of the combined programs involving students from Coughlin, GAR and Meyers, which will be merged into one school in the future.
One consistency, however, was the impact of Allycia Harris, who surpassed 1,000 career points on the way to first-team Division 1 and second-team, all-District 2 honors.
Adjayi, who had been a second-team WVC Division 3 all-star while playing for GAR as a freshman, formed a potent inside game with Harris, who has graduated.
Cook and Luna were the threats on the perimeter.
They helped the Wolfpack start fast and eventually go 14-9 in the first season, including 6-8 for a three-way tie for fourth place in Division 1.
“Wilkes-Barre Area had a successful first season and we are hoping to build on that,” said Mary Mushock-Namey, the former Meyers coach, who guided the team through its debut. “We have an experienced group back and we are looking to use that experience to the best of our ability.”
Junior Reagan Holden and sophomore Mackenzie Evans are among the other players who saw the most varsity time last season on a large roster.
“Knowing it is going to be a ‘different’ kind of year, we are excited to see what this season brings us,” Mushock-Namey said.
