Jaya Franek scored 13 points Saturday night to lead the way as Hazleton Area defeated visiting Pittston Area, 50-33, to move into a tie for the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 girls lead.
The Lady Cougars improved to 3-1 in the division to tie idle Wilkes-Barre Area and Dallas for the lead.
Hazleton Area built its win around shots from beyond the arc.
The Lady Cougars made eight 3-pointers, including three in each of the first two quarters.
Julia Mrochko, Alexa Tihansky and Brooke Boretski all connected in the first quarter for a 17-9 lead.
Carley Krizansky joined Mrochko and Boretski in hitting in the second quarter for a 27-13 halftime lead.
Franek joined in during the third quarter and wound up scoring 11 points in the second half.
Lacie Kringe, during the fourth quarter, became the sixth different Lady Cougar to connect from long range.
Kallie Booth had 11 of her team’s 13 points in the first half and finished with 18 points to lead Pittston Area.

Montrose 41, Susquehanna 28
Montrose limited three-time defending champion Susquehanna to one field goal in the second half while rallying for the victory that the visiting Lady Meteors used to move into a tie for the Lackawanna League Division 4 lead.
The Lady Meteors outscored the Lady Sabers, 25-9, to overcome a three-point halftime deficit.
Ciara Hundley scored 12 of her 14 points in the second half.
Tangi Smith added nine points in the win.
Montrose, one of two teams unbeaten overall in District 2, joined Elk Lake at 4-0.
Lexi Iveson led Susquehanna with 12 points. Meghan Kiernan had the only basket of the second half and finished with 10.
Iveson had nine in the second quarter to key a 14-6 advantage that created the 19-16 halftime lead.
Scranton Prep 75, Valley View 36
Rachael Rose scored 22 points and Cecelia Collins added 20 when unbeaten Scranton Prep went to Valley View and ended the Cougars’ four-game winning streak in the Lackawanna Division 1 game.
The Classics have District 2’s best record. They are beating opponents by an average of 37.6 points in their 7-0 start.
Maria Belardi added 12 points in the win.
Skylar Bianchi scored 16 points and Molly Murphy added 10 for Valley View.
Berwick 50, Crestwood 36
Berwick played for the first time in 16 days and quickly jumped out to an 8-2 lead on the road on the way to the WVC Division 1 victory.
Crestwood stayed within striking distance until the Lady Bulldogs held the Lady Comets without a field goal in a 15-2 third quarter to open a 39-18 lead.
Katie Starr scored 17 points, Renny Murphy had 11 and Jackie Nevel 10. They combined to produce all the third-quarter points.
Helena Jardine had 8 points in the first half and finished with 11 for Crestwood.
Mountain View 62, Forest City 22
Regan Cameron hit four 3-pointers while scoring 22 points to lead Mountain View, which won its second straight after an 0-3 start, in the Lackawanna Division 4 home game.
Morgan Hammond added 12 points and Taylor Neri 11 in the win.
Emily Matoushek led Forest City with 13 points.
Lackawanna Trail 44, Blue Ridge 17
Lackawanna Trail bounced back from its first league loss to improve to 4-1 in Lackawanna Division 4.
The home-court win allowed the Lady Lions to match their highest Division 4 win total from any of the past six seasons before even reaching the halfway point of this season.
Lackawanna Trail was in control throughout and took a 25-10 halftime lead.
Delaware Valley 43, West Scranton 34
Delaware Valley defeated host West Scranton in a Lackawanna Division 1-2 crossover for its first victory of the season.
Dunmore 65, Jim Thorpe 35
Moriah Murray, who hit seven 3-pointers, and Ciera Toomey scored 23 points each for host Dunmore, which pulled away from a seven-point game at halftime of the non-league victory.
Tunkhannock 42, Northwest 33
Sable Stephens scored 20 points as visiting Tunkhannock won for the second straight night, beating its former WVC rival in the non-league game.
Hailey Long added 14 points.
Charleigh Miner led the Lady Rangers with 10 points.
North Pocono 53, Mid Valley 42
Alicia Goldenzeil scored 16 points and four teammates added between 7 and 9 points when North Pocono won the non-league road game.
Kaylee Terranella scored 14 points to lead Mid Valley, which remained within three points until the last two minutes of the second quarter.
Western Wayne 43, Wallenpaupack 22
Western Wayne went to Wallenpaupack and won the non-league meeting of Lackawanna Division 2 rivals who are still scheduled to play two league games later in the season.
