Lackawanna Trail turned Lackawanna League Division 4 girls basketball upside down Wednesday night.
Amaralis Thiel scored 19 points Wednesday night when the Lady Lions brought an end to Susquehanna’s 39-game divisional winning streak with a 54-32 victory.
Susquehanna is the three-time defending champion in the division.
Dating back to 2017-18, the season in which the Lady Sabers started their streak, Lackawanna Trail was 10-38 with two last-place finishes in the past four seasons.
The Lady Lions improved from 1-11 in the league two years ago to 4-8 last season and appear ready to climb higher following a 2-0 start under first-year head coach Joel Nietz.
Thiel went 9-for-10 from the line for Lackawanna Trail, which outscored Susquehanna in each of the first three quarters to build a 41-18 lead. She did all of her scoring in that time, including 15 points in the first half for a 28-13 lead.
Mackenzie Schirg added 12 points and Megan Gatto had 8.
Lackawanna Trail finished 15-for-18 from the line.
Meghan Kiernan and Alexandria Iveson scored eight apiece for Susquehanna.
While one long league winning streak ended, the other two in the Lackawanna League remained intact, setting up showdowns Friday night.
Scranton Prep, another three-time defending champion, will take a 44-game league winning streak into Friday night’s home game with Abington Heights. The Classics are ranked first and Lady Comets third among Big School girls teams in the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams.
Dunmore has won 7 straight titles and 35 straight games in Lackawanna League Division 3. The Lady Bucks, ranked second among Big Schools, will play Friday at Riverside, the top-ranked Small School and the owner of the district’s best overall record at 8-0.
Scranton Prep 63, West Scranton 11
Lizzie Neville scored 12 points of her game-high 14 points while Scranton Prep was building a 43-7 halftime lead on the way to improving its records to 3-0 in the division and 4-0 overall.
The Classics led 28-2 after one quarter and 56-8 after three quarters.
Maria Belardi and Rachael Rose scored 12 points each while Cecelia Collins had 10.
Scranton Prep extended two other winning streaks. It has won 31 in a row overall since being knocked out of the 2018-19 state tournament and 46 straight regular-season games in a row since losing in the 2018 Lynett Memorial Tournament.
Abington Heights 64, Wallenpaupack 32
Rachel McDonald hit four 3-pointers and scored 24 points as Abington Heights kept pace with Scranton Prep by improving to 3-0 in the Lackawanna with the home-court, Division 1-2 crossover victory.
Clair Marion scored 19 points, grabbed 8 rebounds and 3 assists.
Anna Scoblick added 11 points, 5 rebounds and 3 assists.
Allison Dammer grabbed eight rebounds and blocked four shots.
Dunmore 61, Carbondale 30
Moriah Murray scored 16 points to lead the way for Dunmore, which led 40-12 at halftime.
The Lady Bucks are 2-0 in Division 3 and 3-1 overall.
Riverside 71, Lakeland 30
Kylie Lavelle poured in 28 first-half points and finished with 33 before sitting the game’s last 9 minutes.
Lavelle, who also grabbed seven rebounds and made four steals, was 11-for-11 from the foul line. She had 12 points in the first quarter to help the Lady Vikes to a 20-7 lead, then 16 more in the second to make it 44-18 at halftime.
Kayla Rose had 18 points and 15 rebounds.
Emily Taylor had six assists.
Lavelle shot 11-for-17 from the floor in 21 minutes, making her 23-for-32 (71.9 percent) for 62 points in 41 minutes in 2 games this week.
Skylar Arendt had 11 points and Addie Piraino 10 for Lakeland.
Holy Cross 57, Mid Valley 31
Kaci Kranson and Abbey Lentowski helped Holy Cross build a big first-half lead on the way to each finishing with 20 points as Holy Cross won its third straight overall in the Lackawanna Division 3 game.
Kranson scored 13 points in the first quarter when the Lady Crusaders took a 26-4 lead.
Lentowski had 10 in the second quarter when Holy Cross made it 44-11 at halftime.
Kaylee Terranella led Mid Valley with 17 points.
Valley View 54, Scranton 41
Skylar Bianchi, Alivia Romano and Alexa Evangelista combined to lead Valley View to its first victory in the Lackawanna Division 1 game.
Bianchi scored 22 points and grabbed 10 rebounds. Romano had 11 points and made 5 steals. Evangelista, who scored 8 points, grabbed a team-high 19 rebounds.
Molly Murphy also scored eight points.
Elk Lake 60, Forest City 17
Krista Jones scored 20 points to help Elk Lake improve to 2-0 in Lackawanna Division 4 with the road win.
Jones scored eight points while Tamara Voda and Lily Decker added six each in the first quarter to open a 23-7 lead.
Elk Lake then held Forest City to three field goals over the final three quarters.
Voda and Decker finished with 12 points each.
Elk Lake matched Lackawanna Trail for the division lead.
Madeline Shema led Forest City with seven points.
Lake-Lehman 49, Tunkhannock 35
Claire Dougherty scored 26 points to lift host Lake-Lehman into a tie for the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 2 lead with idle Wyoming Area.
The Lady Knights, the fourth-ranked Big School in the Super Six, are 3-0 in the division and 6-0 overall.
Hailey Long scored 12 points to lead Tunkhannock.
Northwest 50, Muncy 21
Morgan Hermanofski scored 20 points and Charleigh Miner hit four 3-pointers to add 16 as Northwest won the Mid-Penn League game at Muncy.
Hermanofski and Miner scored seven points each to lead Northwest to a 17-6 lead after one quarter.
The Lady Rangers built the lead to 31-10 at halftime and 46-15 after three quarters while winning their fourth straight to improve to 5-2.
Northwest is ranked sixth among Small Schools.
