The Big South Conference named University of South Carolina Upstate guard Rachael Rose as its women’s basketball Freshman of the Week Monday afternoon.
Rose, a Scranton Prep graduate and NEPA Elite Clark 17U AAU team alum, went 14-for-22 (63.6 percent) with 35 points, 8 rebounds, 7 steals and 6 assists in a pair of wins by the Spartans during the week that ended Sunday.
Heading into Monday night’s action, Rose led the Big South in total steals (nine) and steals per game (3.0).
Rose had 23 points and 7 steals in her second college game, a 70-51 victory over South Carolina State Nov. 16. She was 5-for-7 with 12 more points in an 81-40 rout of Columbia International Friday.
USC Upstate, coached by Abington Heights graduate Becky Burke, fell to 2-2 Monday night when it lost, 76-54, at the University of Florida. Rose had six points, two steals, a blocked shot and a rebound.
Through four games, Rose is averaging 11.8 points, 3.0 rebounds, 2.8 steals and 1.8 assists. She is shooting 18-for-37 (48.7 percent) from the floor, 2-for-7 (28.6) from 3-point range and 9-for-11 (81.8) from the line.
USC Upstate, a National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I team, is home Sunday against Mars Hill College, an NCAA Division II school from North Carolina.
