Toomey among nation’s top recruits

Attention continues to roll in for Dunmore sophomore basketball star Ciera Toomey.

ESPN-W has Toomey ranked 14th nationally among women’s college recruits from the high school Class of 2023.

The 6-foot-3 Toomey, who is currently playing her AAU season with the NEPA Elite Clark 17U team, is the higher-ranked of the two Pennsylvania players on the 2023 HoopGurlz Recruiting Rankings – Super 60 posted on ESPN.com.

Toomey already has offers from 15 National Collegiate Athletic Association Division I schools, including four in the Big Ten.

Boston College, Bucknell, Michigan, Northeastern, Northwestern, Ohio State, Penn State, Pittsburgh, Rider, St. John’s, Vanderbilt, Villanova and West Virginia have all made full scholarship offers. Columbia and Pennsylvania, as part of Ivy League policy, have offered non-scholarship spots in their programs.

Toomey was a third-team Class 3A all-state choice as a freshman at Dunmore and first-team Class 4A all-stater as a sophomore, leading the Lady Bucks to championships both seasons.

Toomey continues to receive contacts from other major college programs this spring while playing for the NEPA Elite Clark team that won the Hoop Group Showcase League title during its 2020 debut with Toomey as its youngest player and leading scorer.

ESPN.com earlier listed Toomey as one of “15 uncommitted women’s college basketball prospects to watch this summer,” in its assessment of the Division I college recruiting scene.
