Loyalsock used Riverside’s foul trouble and its own foul shooting to knock the Lady Vikes out of the Pennsylvania Interscbolastic Athletic Association Class 3A state tournament with a 60-47, home-court victory in Tuesday’s first round.
Riverside had three starters foul out.
The Lady Vikes lost first-team, all-stater and Drexel University commit Kylie Lavelle with 4:33 left on her fifth foul after she committed her third foul in the second quarter and fourth in the third.
Lavelle’s third foul, an offensive foul call after a collision when a defender approached her from the side, came about after a conference among the officials while she stood at the foul line waiting to shoot with 2:05 left in the half.
The last minute of the third quarter proved costly for Riverside, which had led much of the way to that point during a game in which neither team had built an advantage larger than five points.
Mia Patterson scored with 36 seconds left to put Loyalsock ahead.
Lavelle picked up her fourth foul for going over the back of a Lancers player while pursuing an offensive rebound with 22 seconds left.
Summer McNulty, Loyalsock’s all-stater who scored a game-high 19 points, beat the buzzer on a short jumper from the left side for a 37-34 lead going into the fourth quarter.
Loyalsock led 44-39 when Lavelle fouled out.
The Lancers already had an advantage at the free throw line before shooting 23 more in the fourth quarter when Riverside was forced to chase from behind.
Loyalsock went 24-for-38 from the line while Riverside was 3-for-8.
McNulty led four scorers in double figures.
Patterson added 14 points. Cassie Gee and Allysa Kennedy had 10 each.
Kayla Rose led Riverside with 14 points, including 8 in the fourth quarter.
Lavelle added 13 and Alese Karpinski had 9.
Rose and Karpinski also fouled out.
