ALUMNI REPORT: Corridoni leading Bloom

Meghan Corridoni posted a double-double Tuesday when Bloomsburg University completed preparation for its Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference opener by defeating Chestnut Hill College, 63-57, in Tuesday’s home opener.

Bloomsburg (2-3) entered into a 10-day break from game competition over the Thanksgiving holiday. It returns to action Friday for the PSAC opener against California University of Pennsylvania.

The Huskies feature three District 2 graduates, Holy Redeemer’s Corridoni in the starting lineup, and first-year players Katie Starr and Nya Johnson coming off the bench.

Starr is a freshman from Berwick. Johnson is a sophomore from West Scranton, who missed out on her scheduled first year when PSAC schools sat out the 2020-21 season as a COVID precaution.

Corridoni, the team’s leading scorer and second-leading rebounder, had 19 points and 15 rebounds and led a comeback from a 12-point deficit late in the third quarter.

The 6-foot-1 forward, a graduate student, had a personal, five-point streak to bring Bloomsburg within 43-40 with 7:43 left. Corridoni then hit a 3-pointer to beat the shot clock, cap a 14-4 run and put Bloomsburg ahead to stay, 54-51, with 1:28 left.

Corridoni averages 14.6 points, 9.0 rebounds, 1.4 assists and 0.6 steals.

After beginning her college career in 2016-17, Corridoni started all but two games as a sophomore. She missed the 2018-19 season with injury, but returned to make six starts, and lead the team in rebounds while averaging 7.7 points and 5.3 boards in 20.6 minutes per game.

Starr had 2 points and 2 rebounds in 13 minutes against Chestnut Hill when Johnson played 2 minutes.

Both have played in all five games coming off the bench.

Starr, who averages 5.8 points and 3.8 rebounds in 14.4 minutes per game, is the only Bloomsburg player shooting more accurately than Corridoni from the floor.

The 5-11 forward is 11-for-18 (61.1 percent) and shares the team blocked shots lead of three with Corridoni. Starr went 4-for-5 with 11 points and 7 rebounds in an 81-79 loss to Glenville State in her college debut.

Corridoni is hitting 50 percent from the floor (29-for-58) and 3-point range (5-for-10), making her the team’s most effective shooter from beyond the arc.

Johnson, a 5-8 small forward, has not scored and has tried just 2 shots in 25 minutes. She does have five assists and two rebounds and her rate of an assist every five minutes is the best on the Huskies.
