Defending champions have revamped lineup

EDWARDSVILLE – Berwick’s defending Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 girls champions have issues both in terms of how many players they lost to graduation and who they lost.

“We lost a lot,” Bill Phillips, NEPABasketball.com’s selection for District 2 Coach of the Year, said during Sunday’s WVC Girls Media Day at Grotto Pizza. “We lost four starters.”

Most importantly, Berwick lost two multi-year, all-stars in Bloomsburg University’s Katie Starr, the WVC Division 1 Player of the Year, and Renny Murphy.

“We’re not going to be able to replace Katie Starr or Renny Murphy,” Phillips said. “They were just special players.”

Rachel Whitenight, a 5-foot-10 junior guard, is the only returning starter.

Sadie Zehner, a guard who is one of just three seniors, could miss much of the season with an injury.

“We’re very young,” Phillips said, pointing to a roster of 16 players, only 13 of which are currently available. “We have a bunch of freshmen and sophomores, but we’re energetic.”

Point guards Sarina DeFinnis, a senior, and RaeAnna Andreas, a sophomore, are the team’s other most experienced players.
