BOYS ROUNDUP: Bulldogs win first for Calarco

Sean Murphy scored 11 of his 13 points in the second half Saturday afternoon to lead the way as Berwick defeated host Wyoming Area, 44-38, in a non-league game, giving Bobby Calarco his first win as head coach.

The Bulldogs (1-4) broke a halftime tie.

Brayden Boone, who finished with 11 points, hit two 3-pointers in the first quarter when Berwick took a 13-7 lead.

The Warriors held the Bulldogs to two second-quarter points to force the 15-15 tie.

Murphy had six points and Boone five in the third quarter when Berwick took control, 28-21.

Tahsjee Taylor had six of his eight points in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs held on for the win.

Freshman Dane Schutter had 10 of his game-high 14 points during the fourth quarter for Wyoming Area.

In other Saturday games:

Wyoming Seminary 63, Wyoming Valley West 55

Ethan Meuser scored 20 points to lead four Wyoming Seminary scorers in double figures as the Blue Knights, ranked first among Small School teams in the My City Mortgage Super Six Power Rankings of District 2 teams, improved the district’s best boys record to 5-0.

Jake Koretz (17), Gavin Flanley (14) and Isaiah Stull (12) joined Meuser in double figures in the only night game.

Wyoming Valley West, which played Hazleton Area Friday night, lost to unbeaten teams on the two straight nights by a total of 10 points.

Mason Mendygral led the Spartans with 16 points with the help of three 3-pointers. Steve Barber hit four 3-pointers while adding 14 points.

They each hit twice from long range in the third quarter, but Wyoming Valley West was only able to reduce a 31-25 halftime deficit to 48-43.

The Spartans made a total of 10 shots from behind the arc.

Scranton Prep 65, Dunmore 35

Scranton Prep, the No. 1. Big School in the Super Six, posted its second victory in less than 24 hours by winning the afternoon game at Dunmore.

Gavin Bednarz led the way with 22 points and Robert Rossi added 19.

Bednarz had nine points each in the first and third quarters.

Andrew Ferguson, who chipped in with 11 points, had eight in the second quarter and Rossi matched that in the fourth quarter.

Mid Valley 66, Blue Ridge 46

Mid Valley also followed up a Friday night win with a Saturday afternoon victory.

And, for the second straight game to begin the season, the Spartans were in a close game at halftime before dominating the second half.

Freshman Ricky Vinansky led the way with 24 points.

Vinansky went 10-for-15 from the floor. He also grabbed eight rebounds and made three steals.

Wallenpaupack 47, Carbondale 43

Wallenpaupack overcame a five-point halftime deficit to win at home in the back-and-forth game.

The Buckhorns had a three-point lead after one quarter, but a 15-7 second quarter put the Chargers ahead, 25-20, at the break.

Wallenpaupack used a 19-6, third-quarter advantage to take an eight-point lead into the fourth quarter.
