Crestwood won the Wyoming Valley Conference Division 1 boys basketball title Thursday night, completing a stretch in which it won four straight elimination games by defeating Wilkes-Barre Area, 52-31, at Pittston Area.
The game decided the remainder of the four-way tie for first place after four teams went 10-4 in the division. Both the Comets and Wolfpack won division semifinals Monday to set up the game.
Crestwood wound up without any margin for error eight days earlier when it lost the previous meeting with Wilkes-Barre Area on Brandon Hall’s steal and 35-footer at the buzzer. The Comets went into each of the last two regular-season games and the Monday playoff knowing that a loss would end their title hopes.
The teams had split division meetings with the first game going overtime and the second only avoiding overtime because of Hall’s shot.
Ryan Petrosky made sure there was no such drama this time.
Petrosky led a 12-2 run to end the first half, giving Crestwood a 29-17 lead and putting them in control from there. He finished with 18 points.
Hall led Wilkes-Barre Area with 15 points.
Four other Comets scored at least nine points. Marcus Vieney and Mike Zaleski had nine while Brad Papura and Jacob Zaleski had eight.
Crestwood used the win to move into Saturday’s WVC overall championship game against Wyoming Seminary.
