Bridget Monaghan nailed six 3-pointers Monday night and the University of Scranton limited host Misericordia to 13 points over the final 14 minutes to pull away for a 70-48, non-league women’s basketball victory.
Monaghan finished with 25 points as No. 19 Scranton improved to 5-1 going into Saturday’s 4 p.m. Landmark Conference opener in a meeting of National Collegiate Athletic Association Division III top-25 teams at Catholic University in Washington, D.C.
Misericordia (3-3) was within 43-35 with 4:06 left in the third quarter, but Monaghan hit consecutive 3-pointers to help expand the lead to 51-39 going into the fourth quarter.
Abby Anderson, a graduate student from Holy Cross, had eight points, seven rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot for the Lady Royals.
Skylar Bianchi, a 6-foot freshman forward from Valley View, made her first college start for Misericordia, which had three graduates of District 2 programs in the starting lineup and brought another off the bench.
Mid Valley graduate Morgan Haefele, Dunmore graduate Gianna Delfino and Bianchi each started and scored four points.
Bianchi shared the team lead with six rebounds, five of which came on the offensive end. She also had a steal while playing 18 minutes.
Haefele had three assists, two rebounds and a steal.
Delfino led the team with three steals while also contributing four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Rachel McDonald, a freshman from Abington Heights, played nine minutes coming off the bench. She had a rebound and a steal.
Alyssa Bondi was Misericordia’s top scorer with 14 points.
