Misericordia teams sweep Wilkes

Nate Kreitzer scored 16 points and dished out 7 assists Wednesday night as the Misericordia basketball teams completed a home-court, Middle Atlantic Conference Freedom doubleheader sweep of Wilkes University with a 90-71 men’s victory.

The junior guard from Nanticoke finished 7-for-10 from the floor.

Kreitzer is leading the team in scoring (16.9 per game), 3-pointers made (20) and assists (4.5 per game).

The Cougars placed five players in double figures in the win.

Both teams went into the game 1-1 in the MAC Freedom and came out of it with 3-5 overall records.

Joseph Baldachino scored 14 points for Misericordia while Scranton High graduate Kevin Lazdowsky had 13 and both Nick Hornung and Derek Smith scored 12.

Lazdowsky, a freshman, went 3-for-5 on 3-pointers and finished with 13 points, 5 rebounds, 3 assists, a blocked shot and a steal. He is averaging 12.1 points and 6.6 rebounds while shooting 50 percent from the floor and 46.4 percent on 3-pointers.

Trent Fisher led Wilkes with 19 points.

Drake Marshall and Nickerson DeMelfi added 12 points each.

Cayden Merrifield, a freshman from West Scranton, had eight points, seven assists, three rebounds and two steals in the loss. He missed all nine 3-point attempts, but was 4-for-5 on shots inside the arc.

Merrifield has started half the eight games and is averaging 7.6 points. He is second on the team in assists average (2.6) and tied for second in steals (1.2).

Jackson Shafer, a sophomore from Delaware Valley, and Michael Rickert, a freshman from Riverside, each hit 3-pointers in the loss.

The Misericordia women moved above .500 both in the MAC Freedom and overall.

Alyssa Bondi scored 25 points and Skylar Dowling added 12 for Misericordia (2-1, 5-4) in the 65-52 victory.

Dunmore graduate Gianna Delfino had 8 points, 10 rebounds, 4 assists and 2 blocked shots in 25 minutes coming off the bench.

Morgan Haefele from Mid Valley matched her four assists while contributing four points and a blocked shot.

Erin Shober had 14 points and Kaetlyn Kinczel 10 for Wilkes (1-2, 3-6).

Wilkes used an 8-0 run to take an 8-4 lead.

Misericordia went ahead with the last five points of the first quarter, then a Haefele corner 3-pointer to open the second. The Cougars then stretched the lead to 23-13 midway through the second quarter.

The win was the second straight for Misericordia, both in MAC Freedom games.

Skylar Bianchi, a freshman from Valley View, had eight points and seven rebounds coming off the bench Saturday in an 85-54 romp over Delaware Valley.
