Jason Shields hit a 23-footer over two opponents with one second left in overtime Saturday afternoon to lift Scranton over visiting Maine-Endwell, N.Y., 72-69, in a non-league boys game.
The shot, his sixth 3-pointer, finished a 38-point game for Shields in the back-and-forth game with the team that features some of the graduates of the 2016 Little League Baseball World Series champions.
Arvel Chandler added 24 points, including four 3-pointers.
Dom Lamoureux hit eight 3-pointers while scoring 28 points for the Spartans. Cullen Green added 14 points.
Both hit clutch late-game shots.
Scranton jumped in front, 19-9, after one quarter when Shields hit three 3-pointers and scored 11 points.
Maine-Endwell moved ahead, 32-30, at halftime, but Scranton regained the lead, 49-44, going to the fourth quarter.
Green’s layup tied the game, 61-61, late and Scranton missed at the regulation buzzer.
Shields had eight of Scranton’s overtime points and Chandler had the others on a 3-pointer.
The Knights took a 69-66 lead when Shields hit two free throws with 34.2 seconds left.
Lamoureux tied the game with 20.6 remaining and Scranton played for the last shot.
The Spartans had it well-defended, but Shields went up over the defenders to release the winning shot.
The win was the third straight for the Knights, who improved to 17-2 overall going into Monday night’s home game with Abington Heights to decide the Lackawanna League Division 1 lead.
